A Vermont man correctly picked the exact time the ice went out of Joe’s Pond this year. Bill Barber of St. Johnsbury correctly guessed 2:46 p.m. April 5, 2010, which was the exact time the alarm clock was triggered by the cinder block that fell through the melting ice. More than 11,500 tickets were purchased this year, and Barber, who has a degree in polar science, won $5,000. (“Man guesses ice out to the minute,” AP/BFP, April 9, 2010)

Each winter a 65-pound block is placed on a wooden pallet on the ice of Joe’s pond in West Danville. The unofficial start of spring is marked when the block falls through, and for $1 per guess, gamblers bet on when that will be. This year, the clock tethered to the block was tripped when the ice was blown by heavy winds instead of falling through. According to the contest blog, the rule is once the clock is tripped, it’s official. Ash Desmond of Richmond predicted the closest time — 10:21 p.m. Monday April 20, 2009. Desmond will take home half the earnings after expenses — around $5000 — from 11,401 tickets sold, organizer Homer Fitts said. The earliest ice out date was April 16 in 1998 and 2006; the latest was May 6 in 1992. Tickets go on sale in July. For more information, visit the Ice Out page of the Joe’s Pond Web site.
